Under Armour Invitational – Sunday Recap

The second edition of a flagship Under Armour-sponsored spring tournament, the Under Armour Invitational (called the Are You From Here Classic last year) wrapped up at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas on Sunday, as the Under Armour brand demonstrated an improving and deeper collection of sponsored grassroots teams, and championships were earned in each of the three age brackets. As time moves on, Under Armour continues to signal its intention to get involved with grassroots basketball in a major way, and compete with Nike and adidas in the traveling team arena.
Competition reigns in younger age championships
While the 17-U championship wasn’t in doubt for most of the contest, both the younger age groups had hotly contested and competitive title games.
The Utah Prospects slipped by the Illinois Wolves in the 16-U semifinals by a single point, while Team Thad cruised to a win over Louisville Magic. The title game was a doozy, with Team Thad taking a narrow two point lead at the half. They were relentless against an opponent with plenty of push back in the second half, and Terrence Davis was simply outstanding in pushing his squad to a 59-49 win.
Backcourt play from Naba Echols was essential for Team Thad, and Davis and Malik Smith were dynamic in the frontcourt. Davis, in particular, took over the game in the second half.
The Utah Prospects have a good sized squad that can hit shots and share the ball. Long wings Brock Miller and Zach Selijaas had some great moments in the championship, and Jesse Wade did his part from the backcourt. 6′-9″ center Makol Mawien proved he’s worth watching going forward. >> Read More
